A Winchester dispatch, June 10, tells of the death of Mrs. E. A. Pole,
mentioned in these columns yesterday as follows:
Mrs. Mary Claybrook Pole, wife of Dr. Edgar A. Pole, died this morning of heart trouble at Hot Springs, Va., while arrangements were being made for the wedding tomorrow of her daughter, Miss Judith Pole, to Newton Wiley, a New York financier.
The home was lavishly decorated with flowers and palms, and some of the out-of-town wedding guests had arrived. Mrs. Pole was stricken during the night and expired at 5 o'clock. Her funeral will be held tomorrow morning, and her daughter's wedding will take place quietly Wednesday evening.
Mrs. Pole was a member of a distinguished family of Westmoreland County, Va., She leaves her husband and three children, two sisters, Mrs. Hunter H. McGuire and Mrs. Edward Offley, wife of Lieut. Col. Offley, United States Army, Winchester, and three brothers, Dr. Edward Claybrook, Cumberland, Md.; Rev. Willoughby Claybrook, Tyler, Tex., and John Claybrook, Philadelphia. Another brother was Richard Claybrook, former president of the New York Produce Exchange, who died suddenly in Plainfield, N.J. last November.

Sgt. Richard Atkinson Claybrook

Leopold Troopship Disaster

Richard Claybrook was born on August 19, 1913, and grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. After Pearl Harbor, he made numerous attempts to obtain a commission in the army or navy but was rejected because of his eyesight. He married Virginia Ten Eyck Beardsley on April 2, 1943, in Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church, New York City. The couple's wedding plans were speeded up because he was finally about to be inducted into the army. Following a brief honeymoon, he reported to Ft. Dix, New Jersey on April 7, 1943. The body of Sgt. Claybrook was never found.
