Obituary: Elliot Ashwell Barrows
1937 –Elliot Ashwell Barrows died at his home in Wilton, Connecticut, of colon cancer, on April 16, 1992. He was born on February 1, 1917, in Plainfield, New Jersey, the son of Madeline Ashwell Barrows and Dudley Hammond Barrows. After preparation at Wardlaw School in Plainfield, he entered the II Form in 1932 and left at the end of his V Form year.

Mr. Barrows was a member of Squadron A, 101 st Cavalry, New York National Guard, before joining the USAAF in February 1941. He was a navigator instructor in Louisiana, and then flew with the 10th Air Force over the "Hump" between China and India, sereved as Air Liaison Officer with Mars Task Force in Burma and with the Bth Air Force on Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. He left the service in December 1945.

After the war he was in the advertising business for Sports Afield, Field and Stream, and Golf Magazine. He was founder and publisher of Plant Location, the Industrial Geographic Encyclopedia and also chronicler/ publisher of Corporate Histories.

Mr. Barrows was the author of Heyday 1918-1990, an autobiography containing ebullient descriptions of his schooldays and military life; and Facing the Inevitable, a collection of quotations relating to illness and death –he wrote both books after learning he had only a few months to live.

He is survived by his wife, Amabel Eshleman, whom he married on April 3, 1943; two daughters, Amabel Kilby Allen and Madeline Ashwell Cooke; a son, William Dudley Barrows; and five grandchildren.

Joan B. Yeomans, 85, died peacefully on Monday, (July 9, 2007), at RiverMead after a valiant struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Yeomans was born in Plainfield, NJ, on October 17, 1921, the daughter of Madeline (Ashwell) and Dudley Barrows. She attended the Hartridge School and graduated from Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, in 1940. She later studied drafting at the New York Art Students' League and pursued her career at architectural firms in San Francisco and New York City. She married Clinton Babcock Yeomans in 1953, and they were residents of West Hartford until the early 1980s when they retired to their summer home in Dublin, NH. While in Connecticut, Mrs. Yeomans was an active member of the Junior League, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Ladies' Committee of the Wadsworth Athenaeum, and the Hartford Golf Club. In Dublin, she was active in the Dublin Garden Club, the Dublin Lake Club, and Riding & Walking Club, and Emmanuel Church, as well as St. James Church in Keene and All Saints Church in Peterborough. She and her husband were among the first residents to move to RiverMead in 1996. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Yeomans leaves a sister, Muriel Neall of Tiverton, RI; three daughters, Grace Thaler of Boston, MA, Carol Conard of Shelburne, VT, and Tyler Madden of Simsbury and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 17, at 2 p.m., at All Saints Church in Peterborough, NH. Reverend Adrian Robbins-Cole, Pastor, will officiate. Private burial services, conducted by Reverend Jamie Hamilton, will be held later for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60601-7633, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Garden Club Plans For Flower Show

Plans were about completed for the flower show of the Plainfield Garden Club at a meeting yesterday in the home of the chairman. Mrs. Wallace Coriel, 963 Central Avenue. The show is to be held May 5 and 6 in the Assembly Room of the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Richard Lawton, a prize winner in many horticultural exhibitions, is schedule chairman, and is spected to have schedules printed soon for distribution.

Fully two-thirds of the 50 classes scheduled are listed as "horticultural." The flower arrangment classes are in the minority. The schedule is planned to be of educational value to both experienced gardeners and beginners.

The committee includes Mrs. Corriell, chairman, Mrs. Dudley H. Barrows, secretary; Mrs. Harry Williams, treasurer; Mrs. C. Boardman Tyler and Mrs. William K. Dunbar, decoration and floor plan; Mrs. Henry L. DeForest, properties; Mrs. Henry Marshall, staging; Mrs. Lawton and Mrs. Henry C. Wells, schedule; Mrs. William S. Tyler, exhibits.

Also Miss Harriette R. Halloway, specimens; Miss Josephine Lapslety, entries; Mrs. Garret Smith, publicity; Mrs. Leslie R. Fort and Mrs. Edward H. Ladd Jr., judges, and Mrs. Clifford M. Baker, prizes.
